The United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND), the body that decides which substances are
considered as drugs approved, Wednesday 2 December 2020, the "reclassification" of
cannabis and its resin in international conventions. The plant is now recognized
for its medical utility.
Until now, cannabis and its resin were considered according to their classification in
Annex IV of the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs in Category 1
more restrictive. The one where are listed the substances that strongly promote abuse and
have very little medical benefit. This is no longer the case after the very close vote (27 for, 25
against, 1 abstention) during the 63rd session of the CND. You should know that the organization followed the
recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO) because the latter had already requested
in 2019, supported by scientific studies, to remove these substances from Schedule IV, as they
present “therapeutic potential”. Cannabis can now be used in the
manufacture of drugs, like opium or morphine, without its use being
discouraged by the UN, as it was until then.
