Cannabinoids are a group of chemicals that activate cannabis receptors found in the human body and in mammals.

The first cannabinoid isolated was tetrahydrocannabinol, then cannabidiol and other cannabinoids. These discoveries were initiated and made in the 1960s by Pr. Raphael Mechoulam, an Israeli researcher. There are around 100 different cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant and researchers around the world are currently studying their potential therapeutic effects and how they work in the human body.

There are three types of cannabinoids:

plant cannabinoids (phytocannabinoids), present in Cannabis sp. or degradation products of tetrahydrocannabinol;

endogenous cannabinoids (endocannabinoids) secreted by certain animal organisms;

synthetic cannabinoids, produced in the laboratory.
